Ireland's Minister for Hardship

Classic Irish comedy from the 1970s . . .

. . .But first some background. Here is comedian Eamonn Morrissey as the "Minister for Hardship", which was a humourous impersonation of Liam Cosgrave, our Taoiseach from 1973 to 1977. Back in those days, inflation was in double-digit figures; but also significant was the fact that most people in the country had only one television channel at home, RTE. And one of their most popular programmes was the humorous Hall's Pictorial Weekly.

This weekly programme was introduced and the sketches were linked by journalist and broadcaster Frank Hall, seen here introducing and closing this piece.

I believe this sketch was written and broadcast shortly after a rather "tight" Budget.

Enjoy!

It's good to see you back, Brendan. Hall's Pictorial Weekly was the last black-and-white programme produced by RTE, I think.

I've been mistaken for Frank Hall more than once, on one occasion by the late Paddy Crosbie who had been a classmate of my late father. Frank is a person I'd love to have met. Only last summer at an Irish-Filipino wedding in Tullamore, a Cork guest - the groom was from Cork - fairly well on both in age and in lubricity, if there's such a word, came up to me. 'I hope you won't be offended, Father, and my wife's goin' to kill me for askin'. But did anyone ever tell you you're the image of Frank Hall?'

I've always taken that as a compliment. May Frank, with his wonderful sense of humour, Paddy Crosbie and my Dad all rest in peace.
